Night Fantasy

In this painting Victor depicts the most magical time of the day, the time when day turns into evening. In Victor's childhood memories are Russian folktales of wizards who live in old windmills. Usually there would only be one or two windmills in a village. In "Night Fantasy", Victor depicts an entire village, where all of the houses are windmills. It is a wizard's village, and the wizards have constructed a magical ladder to Heaven. When the magicians are in their village, they are normal human size. In this painting, the wizards have miniaturized themselves and are on a magical expedition in a field of flowers at dusk. Their subject of study is female energy, symbolized by the apple and by the flowers, and also by the three female figures made of leaves, and hidden among the plants. Throughout Victor's body of work, he uses butterflies to symbolize the human soul. Viewing the profile formed by the edge of the butterfly wing here, we see that this particular butterfly represents the soul of woman. This soul also embodies the spirit of a panther, showing the feline aspect of woman; the eye of the panther is the spot on the butterfly's wing.
