Adam and Eve elucidates the relationship between three universal archetypes: Adam, Eve, and the apple. Adam (portrayed as a profile head portrait) represents the universal creative principle, the masculine and the spiritual side of life.
Eve represents the female aspect of the universe. As this aspect is associated with the subconscious, Eve is shown reflected in the water, another symbol for subconscious forces. The female principle is also associated with the physical place; thus Eve’s reflection in the water is shown as her physical body.
In other words, Eve and Adam represent body and soul, yin and yang. In Jungian psychology, the apple eaten by Adam and Eve symbolizes the life force. The apple may also be understood as representing the eternal aspiration for knowledge.
